On Saturday 17th February, the results of the 28th “Golden beer seal 2018” tasting competition were announced in České Budějovice. The competition ranks among the largest in the world regarding the number of samples. Expert panels evaluated 1,007 beer samples from 222 breweries of 18 countries.
Two beers brewed in Budweiser Budvar Brewery were awarded bronze medals in this year’s competition: dark lager “Budweiser Budvar B:DARK” and a mixed beverage from beer “PardálOVO bezové”. “We are very happy with the medals, as the competition was huge. The level of beer competitions is now very high and virtually all samples are of excellent quality. Moreover, our dark lager defended the bronze medal won in last year's competition,” says Budweiser Budvar’s PR manager Petr Samec.
Dark lager “Budweiser Budvar B:DARK”
Budweiser Budvar B: DARK has been brewed since 2004 using four kinds of barley malt (Czech, Munich, caramel and roasted) and whole Saaz hops. When launched on the market, it was one of the first to bring local consumers a drier roasted flavour and a higher bitterness in the category of dark beers. This lager is characterized by a very dark colour, a dry and slightly bitter caramel flavour without dominant sweetness and a delicate aroma of roasted malt and coffee. The alcohol content is 4.7% by volume. Its flavour is well suited for women as well. Besides the Czech Republic, it is also sold in other countries, such as Germany, Russia, the UK and Finland. Budweiser Budvar B: DARK has received a number of awards from abroad, most notably a bronze medal in the “2015 U.S. Open Beer Championship”, two gold medals in the Monde Selection competition (2010 and 2011) and especially the title “World Best Lager” awarded by the British magazine “Beers of the World” in 2007. Since 2006, the dark lager has also received twelve medals from the Czech Beer Friends’ Association, now defending its third position in the “Golden beer seal” competition from last year.
Mixed beverage from beer “PardálOVO bezové”
“PardálOVO bezové” was launched on the market in 2013. Its development began in September 2011. In October 2012, initially 120 representatives of consumers were involved in fine-tuning the parameters of the beverage - including women for the first time - while the next phase saw nearly 1,000 of their friends and family members involved. “PardálOVO bezové” is made from Pardál Echt Pale Lager and quality syrup from elderflower without adding any artificial colouring agents and chemical preservatives. It perfectly combines the flavour and refreshing aroma of the elderflower, while not suppressing the distinctive beer character and bitterness. For that reason it is well accepted not only by men but also by women. The beverage contains 2% alcohol and is supplied on the market in 0.5-litre cans. So far, “PardálOVO bezové” has received a gold medal in the “Beer of the Czech Republic 2017” competition and a silver medal in the “Beer of the Czech Republic 2016” competition.
