Today, the Beer Friends Association (BFA hereinafter) made public the results of its annual evaluation of beer, breweries and  personalities in the brewing industry for 2010. Budweiser Budvar Dark Lager was awarded a silver medal in the “Dark Beer of 2010” category. “Considering the keen competition in the Czech beer market we appreciate this award a great deal. The medal from the BFA is even more valuable in the light of the fact that the evaluation is a complex one based on the combination of voting and tasting by real beer connoisseurs,” says Budweiser Budvar’s PR Manager Petr Samec.

Having been launched on the market six years ago, the dark lager has thus increased the total of its awards in both domestic and international contests onto eleven, the most prestigious being the “World’s Best Lager” title in 2007 in the international contest of the British beer magazine “Beers of the World” along with a gold medal in the worldwide quality contest Monde Selection.

Budweiser Budvar Dark Lager’s quality and extraordinary flavour attributes are confirmed also by the fact, that the beer is exported to 34 countries. This year, the brewery launched the export of kegs to China and bottles to Australia. The overall sales of Budweiser Budvar Dark Lager reached 19,418 hectolitres last year, which is approximately 1.5% of the brewery’s total production.

About the BFA
The awards by the BFA have been a traditional beer contest in the Czech Republic since 1990. The winning beers represent a combination of popularity and quality. In the first part of the contest, the BFA members and supporters conduct a vote. In the other part of the contest, members of the Beer Assembly (a body elected in accordance with the BFA rules) evaluate the beers and establish the final results. The evaluation is based on anonymous tasting. The BFA has been a member of the European Beer Consumers Union (EBCU) since 2005, where it tries to further the interests of the Czech brewing industry and at the same time gain useful experience from similarly aimed organizations. Budweiser Budvar Dark Lager
Budweiser Budvar Dark Lager has been in the Budweiser Budvar Brewery’s product range since 28th April 2004. It is of distinctly dark colour, a thick lasting head and a delicate roasted malt aroma. As opposed to most dark beers on the Czech market, Budweiser Budvar Dark Lager is not characterized by a prevailing sweet taste – on the contrary, it is mildly bitter with a caramel accent. It is brewed in the same procedure as the pale lager using whole heads of Žatec hops and water from 300m deep artesian wells. However, the two beers differ in the use of four kinds of malt: Czech, Munich, caramel and roasted. Budweiser Budvar Dark Lager has an alcohol content of 4.7% vol. and is supplied in both kegs and bottles.
