Budweiser Budvar sees the year 2008 a successful one

Budweiser Budvar, N.C.’s 2008 sales reached the total of 1,312,580 hectolitres of beer, which represents a 4.75% year-on-year production increase. Such a result is much valued considering the fact that the production of Czech breweries fell by 0.5% in 2008. Budweiser Budvar’s domestic sales came to 731,059 hectolitres of beer, which is 9.7% more than the year before. Budweiser Budvar therefore strengthened its share of the Czech market since last year’s beer consumption in the Czech Republic decreased by 1.3%. The brewery’s export was partially affected by the global economic recession, suffering a year-on-year decrease of 0.9%. Nonetheless, the export of 581,518 hectolitres made the second highest export in the brewery’s history. 

“We see the year 2008 a successful one, as we managed to considerably increase the brewery’s sales, run the brewery with a profit and invest a substantial amount into further advancement of the brewery. Moreover, 2008 saw the Pardál brand successfully launched on the nationwide market,” Budweiser Budvar’s managing director Jiří Boček assesses the year 2008.

Additionally, the planned profit was met, amounting to CZK 213 million before the bank reserve of CZK 80 million was made. The brewery’s operation was affected by many negative factors last year: The strengthening of the Czech currency had a negative impact of CZK 140 million on Budweiser Budvar’s takings. The increase of purchase prices brought additional costs of approximately CZK 90 million with the essential ingredients and CZK 28 million with the packaging material. Increased transporting charges and raised energy costs also significantly influenced the economic results of the brewery, as did the beginning global economic recession.   

In 2008, Budweiser Budvar invested CZK 282 million into the brewery’s development. Two beer filling equipment worth CZK 80 million made the key part of the investment; further funds went to the sales promotion, restoration of company vehicles, packaging, IT and the logistics - launching the new warehouse construction. All the investment was covered entirely by the brewery’s own funds. 

In the period of 2000-2008, Budweiser Budvar had a highly positive outcome of legal disputes with the Anheuser-Busch Company, as 82 cases out of 115 finalised trials and administrative procedures were won and 7 cases finished with a compromise or a tied result. Presently, 17 trademark disputes (including administrative actions) with the Anheuser-Busch Company are in progress in 10 countries.

Budweiser Budvar’s sales increased annually by 4.5 % in 2008, having reached the volume of 1,312,580 hectolitres of beer. The brewery’s 2007 gross profit annually grew by 13% onto the total of CZK 302 million. Since 1991, about CZK 3,500 million has been invested into the modernization and development of the brewery.
