1,000 hectolitres of beer already drunk in the Masné krámy restaurant this year

1. 9. 2008 | České Budějovice

One of the Czech most proverbial restaurants - the Masné krámy restaurant, has already drawn 1,000 hectolitres of beer. The largest credit in that goes to Budweiser Budvar Krausened Lager. The Masné krámy restaurant is the only place in the world where this type of beer is drawn directly from the tank. 874.2 hectolitres of it has been sold this year so far, which amounts to 87 % of the total volume. The dark lager, draught beer and alcohol-free beer from the Budweiser Budvar product range made up the rest of the beer drawn.

“Drawing 1,000 hectolitres of beer within eight moths proves that the Masné krámy restaurant has managed to take up its historical fame following last year’s re-opening. Should the sales results be looked at in detail, it can be detected that our guests have drunk altogether 185,604 large and 23,992 small beers, which can be seen as creditable numbers indeed,“ says Budweiser Budvar Gastro department’s manager Antonín Janský.

The Masné krámy restaurant draws the guests’ attention not only due to its excellent beer, but also thanks to its exceptional kitchen. “That has been well confirmed by the fact that the total of 58,078 main meals, i.e. 238 meals a day on average, has been consumed in the Masné krámy restaurant this year so far. The most favoured meal has undoubtedly been the ‘Brewer’s goulash’ served with dumplings (two types), horseradish and onion, whose sales have reached 6,185 meals,” adds the Masné krámy restaurant’s manager Tomáš Olejník.

Other preferred meals sold are as follows:
Roasted pork served with two types of dumplings and sauerkraut - 3,508 meals
Grilled pork ribs - 3,218 meals
Sirloins of beef served with cream sauce and dumplings - 3,062 meals
Roast leg of duck, sauerkraut, two types of dumplings - 2,316 meals
Roasted pork knuckle - 1,935 meals

Soup is also popular amongst guests, as an overall 21,845 portions of soups have been sold. The most popular soup has been the garlic soup (6,953 portions), followed by the tripe soup (6,797 portions) and beef bullion with rolled liver (4,300 portions).

The original historical keg face, which used to be a part of the interior of the 1956 Masné krámy restaurant as an advertisement for Budweiser Budvar beer, was placed above the restaurant’s entrance on the occasion of conquering the 1,000 hectolitre mark of the beer drawn. “Placing the historical keg face above the restaurant’s entrance is of key symbolic importance. During the reconstruction, we paid attention to the historical sequence on the original Masné krámy restaurant, therefore we are pleased that this historical artefact is been back where it belongs,” adds Budweiser Budvar’s PR manager Petr Samec.

The Masné krámy restaurant’s capacity is presently 190 places, since a 4 further tables have been added into the interior during this year as a result of the customers’ interest. The restaurant is open daily; the opening hours are Mon - Thu 10.30 a.m. - 11 p.m., Fri - Sat 10.30 a.m. - midnight, Sun 11 a.m. - 9 p.m. Reservations can be made on 387 201 301 or by email info=roll=masne-kramy.cz. ‘Masné krámy’ Restaurant
The present building of Masné krámy probably comes from 1554. As the name suggests, its purpose used to be to sell meat. In 1953, the building was rebuilt into a pub, quickly gaining considerable popularity owing to first-class Budweiser Budvar beer as well as serving excellent food. Following the 2002 floods the pub had to be closed down and was re-opened after a five-year break on 5th December 2007. The reconstructed interior designed and supplied by Story Design a.s., follows not only the original restaurant’s tradition but also the historic character of the building. Therefore such architectural elements and traditional materials had been chosen so that they support the historic outcome (solid oak, natural leather, black mat metal and patina copper). The interior furniture is of a simple and purposeful character evoking the historic unity with the building. That is not to say that even more modern trends of restaurant facilities equipment were not used in Masné krámy. For that reason LC screens and other LC projection equipment can be found in here, so can WIFI internet connection or wireless cashier equipment. The capacity of the restaurant is 190 places.

“Krausened Lager” in Masné krámy
Masné krámy’s beer offer is dominated by Budweiser Budvar Krausened Lager, which is drawn directly from the beer tank only in here and in no other restaurant in the world. Krausened Lager is also available in other selected Czech restaurants, nonetheless only drawn from kegs, since it is very vulnerable to storing and care conditions, which are met only by some restaurants. Due to its content of live yeast, the lager must be kept in a temperature of 6-8 °C. The initial brewing procedure of the Krausened Lager is the same as with Budweiser Budvar Czech Premium Lager. The difference lies in the fact that a certain amount of “rings” is added into the ready-to-consume beer, supplying the beer with a new culture of brewing yeast at its best condition plus another share of the extract. Further fermentation of the beer then takes place. The resultant Krausened Lager contains live yeast culture, providing the beer with better sensory qualities distinct from the traditional keg lager (greater fullness of the flavour, stronger tang, firmer head etc.)
