Saturday’s “Open Day in Budvar” is going to commemorate the 119th anniversary of founding Budweiser Budvar Brewery

On 20th September, Budweiser Budvar, N.C. is going to celebrate the 119th anniversary of its founding with a cultural event for the general public called an “Open Day in Budvar”. Budweiser Budvar’s direct predecessor - the Czech Joint-Stock Brewery, was founded by Czech brewers who followed in the more than 700-year old tradition of brewing beer in České Budějovice (formerly called Budweis). The first batch - a mere 200 hectolitres, was brewed in this brewery on 7th October 1895 by the brewmaster Antonín Holeček. Since 1895, the brewery’s brewing house has seen another 9 brewmasters change hands in the position (the tenth being Adam Brož, Ph.D. presently). During the first year of its operation, the brewery’s overall production reached 35,223 hectolitres of beer. Budweiser Budvar’s last year production was 40 times higher (1,424,000 hl). In the 119 years of its existence, Budweiser Budvar has produced a total of 47 million hectolitres of beer.

During the next weekend, the iconic Masné krámy restaurant in České Budějovice is organising the celebration of this year’s two significant anniversaries for all favourers of good beer and food. It has been 650 years since the original meat market (‘masné krámy’ in Czech) was moved from the Market Square (today’s Přemysl Otakar II. Square) to its present location in Krajinská St. in 1364. In addition to that, on 1st October 2014, sixty years will have passed since the opening of the Masné krámy restaurant in the historical premises of the 16th century’s meat market.

On Friday 29th August, the Budweiser Budvar Brewery’s brewing house experienced an extraordinary event, as two special batches (800 hectolitres) of 16° BUD B:STRONG were brewed using fresh cones of Saaz “poloraný červeňák” hops harvested only several hours before on the “Splav“ hop field in the cadastre of the hop-growing municipality of Blšany. The volume of the beer brewed represents double of last year’s volume. Owing to its extraordinary long maturing period (200 days), the beer made from fresh hops will reach its consumer maturity in the second half of March 2015. It will be available in selected restaurants not only around the Czech Republic, but in several other countries as well.

“Budweiser Budvar is not threatened by the sale of Samson Brewery to the transnational group Anheuser-Busch InBev (hereinafter referred to as ABI). Changing the owner has no bearing on the trademarks, the course of lawsuits between Budweiser Budvar and ABI, or any business activities,” says Budweiser Budvar’s PR manager Petr Samec.

Budweiser Budvar Brewery has won a lawsuit over the BUDWEISER trademark in Portugal. The Court of Appeal in Lisbon (Tribunal da Relacao de Lisboa) has dismissed the appeal of Anheuser-Busch InBev company (hereinafter referred to as ABI), thus finally ending the long effort of the multinational company to register the BUDWEISER trademark in this country.

The Pardál run - an obstacle course fine-tuned by Pardál brand’s beer connoisseurs, will be officially open to the public on Saturday 28th June at 1 p.m. Besides an exhibition conquest of the course by teams made of leading South Bohemian sportsmen, a bountiful musical programme is also prepared, culminating with fireworks before midnight. Open to the public every day during the holidays and at the weekends in September and October, the Pardál run is intended for everyone fond of active entertainment and older than 18.

The book “Prkýnka na maso jsme uřízli” (“We Cut the Chopping Boards”) published within the long-run project called BU2R has been presented the most beautiful Czech book of 2013. The competition is run by the Museum of Czech Literature and the main prizes are presented by the Czech Ministry of Culture. BU2R is an original project of the Budweiser Budvar brand, which has been supporting the original urban cultural production since 2007. Among others, BU2R has carried out the publishing of four other books, one out of which won the competition for the most beautiful book (“Město = Medium”, “Town = Medium”, 2012) and other two came second (“Zde jsou psi”, “There are dogs here”, 2010 and “Kmeny”, “Tribes”, 2011).

The Masné krámy restaurant’s head chef has decided to liven up its menu with some dishes that will bring the exotica of distant countries to České Budějovice. Starting tomorrow until Saturday, the special “Exotic dishes” menu will offer for instance kangaroo ragout, zebra cuts or Atlantic halibut.
